Valve has partnered BitPay to bring Bitcoin payments to Steam. There isn’t much to say about the deal, except that this is opens yet another payment option for Steam users. Although this would probably help those who would like to be able to buy games using their hard earned Bitcoin.
Using Bitcoin is as easy as selecting the payment option at checkout, and then supplying the appropriate amount of Bitcoin to the address provided by BitPay. Yes, this does use a third party to process the Bitcoin transfer and users are redirected to a separate Window to finalise the transaction.
As far as the amount of Bitcoin required is concerned, Valve says that it will be converted based on the daily exchange rate with the local currency. Meaning that the amount may vary quite a bit depending on how the value of Bitcoin is doing that particular day.
Steam has been expanding the number of payment options available to users; most of which cater to those who do not have access to – or refuse – a credit card. Malaysian users have a variety of options for adding funds to their Steam Wallets, including Hotlink prepaid credits and MOL points.
