After more than 10 years, Microsoft has finally announced that it will no longer be manufacturing the much loved Xbox 360 console. Last year, the legendary console celebrated its 10th anniversary and apparently now, Microsoft has decided that it is time. The announcement was made by Microsoft’s head of Xbox, Phil Spencer.
Despite no longer being produced, Microsoft mentioned that Xbox 360 owners will continue to receive updates for their console. Services such as Xbox Live, online servers as well as apps will not be affected by the cessation of production. In addition to that, all Xbox 360-compatible hardware will also be supported through Xbox’s official support page.
The Xbox 360 made its first debut back in 2005, and has since seen about five different variations. As of September of 2013, the worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 was estimated to be in the region of 78.2 million. Meanwhile, Xbox’s competitor, PlayStation, decided to stop the production of the PS3 console way back in 2015.
Interestingly, the Xbox 360’s controller still remain a favourite amongst many gamers today – especially those on PC. Alas, it’s time to say goodbye to an iconic console. Do not go gentle into that good night, dear Xbox 360.
