Known for its attachment with Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) since the project’s establishment in 1996, the Multimedia Development Corporation now has a new name in the form of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation. The letter “e” in its previous abbreviation (MDeC) has also been capitalized (MDEC) to mark the new name.
Being positioned under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia, MDeC’s primary role when it was formed around 20 years ago was managing the development of MSC as well as providing advice to government regarding policies that are related to technology and ICT. The agency was also responsible to attract and assist international ICT companies into setting up their businesses in MSC.
eRezeki is one of several digital economy initiatives that MDeC worked on after its role was expanded in 2011.
In 2011, MDeC’s role was then expanded to include the development of digital economy in Malaysia. This resulted in the creation of Digital Malaysia initiative which aims to increase the contribution of ICT into Malaysia’s Gross National Income to 17% by 2020, among others.
While MDEC assured that the new name doesn’t affect any existing relationships that it has built over the years, it is clear that the agency wants to reflect its role much more clearly through the name. Nevertheless, it comes just in time for the agency’s 20th anniversary.
