It’s that time of year again; with another hacking group is targeting console networks for the holiday season. This time it is a group calling itself the Phantom Squad, which took down Xbox Live for about two hours last night. The group is now saying that it will move on to the PlayStation Network next.
Phantom Squad had announced its intentions to launch DDoS attacks on both Xbox Live and PSN during the Christmas period over Twitter last week. However, many dismissed their threats; which lead to the group deciding to launch its attacks early.
The group has also claimed responsibility for taking down Reddit and several other services over the last couple of weeks. Interestingly, it is claiming to have taken Xbox Live down several times in that time period; although a proposed attack on Steam failed to materialise after the group changed its mind at the last minute.
A similar attack happened last year, where a different group took down Xbox Live and PSN during the holidays. Lizard Squad has since gone quiet, after three members of the group were tracked down by law enforcement agencies.
