Hideo Kojima is getting the Metal Gear gang back together. Yoji Shinkawa and Ken Imaizumi – who were Metal Gear artist and producer respectively – have joined Kojima Productions and will function in senior roles. Kojima has also said that the new game he is working on will “be more edgy”.
There is no information about Kojima’s new game for PlayStation yet, although it appears that mechs will be involved. Shinkawa allowed the tidbit of information slip while talking to IGN about what he is currently up to in the new studio. We’re not entirely surprised that mechs are involved, considering the history all three men have with Metal Gear.
Kojima explained that his studio will be working on video games first, but has not ruled out other media as well. Kojima said, “The focus is on digital content, so we could consider movies, animations, anything. But first I think people expect games from me. That’s where I want to put my focus. Once we have an established IP in games, something solid that satisfies people, then we can consider movies and videos.”
The legendary game designer also reiterated his willingness to work with Guillermo del Toro once again. The two had been developing a new Silent Hills game before Kojima’s fallout with Konami shut the project down. Of course, the outcome of any new collaboration would not necessary be a game; and it certainly won’t be a Silent Hills title.
It looks like Kojima is exploring his options now that he can call the shots and is free from Konami. “We’ll have more agility,” he said. “We’ll be able to do things that are more edgy, preserving the quality we’ve had so far, while at the same time finding new challenges and exploring new areas.”
