Google Malaysia has published its Top Trending Searches of 2015, and we’re more that a little puzzled by the most searched term in Malaysia. It’s not exactly what one would one would have expected, although the rest of the Top 10 is still rather predictable. Naturally, the memetic John Cena has somehow managed to creep into the Top 10 people searched as well.
Taking top spot in the Malaysian Trending Searches for 2015 is the term ‘HRMIS 2.0’; which refers to the online human resource portal for civil servants. Considering that there is approximated 1.5 million of them, it really shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that this came up a lot. The top five is rounded out by BR1M 2015, How-Old.net, Maharaja Lawak Mega, and Fast & Furious 7.
Deceased former Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew, who passed away in March, was the most searched person on Google in 2015. Similarly, Fast & Furious 7 star Paul Walker – who died in a car accident – was the second most searched person. Embattled Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Razak came in third. Actress Mia Ahmad and murdered deputy prosecutor Kevin Morais round out the top five searches.
“Google searches continue to act as a cultural barometer that gives us a real snapshot of the major events, popular individuals and top trends that collectively made an impact on the life of Malaysians,” said Zeffri Yusof, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Google Malaysia. “Google is where most Malaysians turn to for information and we hope the lists we’ve compiled on Malaysian searches reflects the national ‘spirit of the times’.”
