Facebook Messenger appears to be down at the moment. The instant messaging service stopped working about half an hour ago, and there has been no announcement on the matter. All we know is that messages are not being sent from both the web client and Messenger app.
At the moment, the web version of Messenger fails to display old messages; or at least those sent before this morning. Opening conversations simply displays a blank space and the current time. Attempting to send a message results in the standard “message failed to send” notice. The Messenger app appears to behave normally, although it fails to send any messages.
Not everyone is currently affected by the issue, as half our office is still able to hold conversations as normal. Users on Reddit from around the world have also been reporting issues with Messenger as of half an hour ago.
There is no official way of checking on the status of Facebook Messenger, although this third party service is saying that there has been a problem since 1.24am EST (about 2pm local time).
We will keep you updated on the matter, but for now just enjoy the peace and quiet of not having multiple Facebook conversations going on at the same time.
Update: It looks like Facebook Messenger is up and running again. No idea what went wrong, but it looks like Facebook managed to solve the problem.
