PlayStation has announced the PlayStation Messages app, that lets PSN users to chat with each other right from their phones. Although there is already an existing messaging feature in the official PlayStation app, this new app is the standalone version of the feature itself. Through the app, users can see if their friends are online as well as sending voice messages, in addition to sending stickers and attachments.
The app’s functions are pretty similar to Facebook’s Messenger app, except that all of the people in PlayStation Messages are PSN users. Besides that, messaging is the only function PlayStation Messages is capable of. You still need the PlayStation app to access more content such as PlayStation news. The app is currently available for both iOS and Android devices.
Additionally, the PlayStation app was recently updated with the ability to follow verified users and the removal of the messaging functionality.
“We know that Messages is the most used feature of the PlayStation App, so we created the standalone PlayStation Messages app with a more streamlined design in order to get you into your Messages and communicating with your friends faster than ever before,” PlayStation stated in its blog.
Obviously, the best thing about the PlayStation Messages app is that you don’t even need to use your console to check if your PSN buddies are online. It is not only easier to find and talk to fellow PSN users, but it can be practically used as an invitation tool, as shown in the right side of the screenshot above.
