The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has said that it has blocked 1,074 pornography websites for violating the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Reasons for the blocks was cited as to preserve “the noble values possessed by people of various ethnics and religions in the country.”
According to the MCMC, it has successfully blocked eight of the ten most popular porn websites on the internet, at least according to Alexa ratings. The Star Online reports that one of the unblocked sites was inaccessible for unknown reasons, while the other unblocked site was untouched by the MCMC.
The comment was made by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak during the MIC Deepavali open house yesterday. Salleh had also said that an additional 106 more sites would be added to the list for committing the same offence. He did not specify which sites are being added, or why there is a delay in deploying the block.
He told reporters, “it is important for the MCMC to take action as this is the root cause of social problems in our country.” Salleh also advised the public to provide information on other websites that were spreading obscene content.
It is unknown which sites have been blocked by the MCMC, although it would be easy for curious readers to attempt to find out for themselves. However, it is not advisable for them to do so due to the “social problems” that viewing pornography may cause.
