It seems like the Nexus 6P is plagued by one issue after another. After failing the bend test (twice), users have reported that the back glass window – the visor of the rear camera – has “spontaneously” crack. Things are not looking good for the first-ever Nexus device from a Chinese manufacturer.
On Reddit, several users have reported of the very same issue with the back glass window cracking, so that rules out any fault on the users’ part. One Redditor wrote that his Nexus 6P was placed on a table next to him when he “heard the glass snap.” The fact that the glass cracked without any obvious reasons does raise a few concerns.
As to how the glass window of the Nexus 6P would crack out of a sudden, Redditor RedHeadedMenace offered this explanation. He was, however, quick to point out that he is by no means an expert:
The method used to temper Gorilla glass involves giving the glass ion baths to strengthen it. The strength comes at a cost though – due to the strong attraction of the glass particles to one another and compression of the whole, the glass develops lines of internal torque and stress, leading to explosive results if the glass is impacted or pressed from the wrong angle.
Whether or not this is a widespread issue still remains to be seen; it’s entirely possible that only certain batches of the Nexus 6P are affected by this. Regardless, here’s hoping Huawei or Google will rectify the cause of the issue soon.
