The trailer for the upcoming Warcraft movie was not the only piece of entertainment news to come out of BlizzCon 2015. Activision-Blizzard also announced that it is founding its own film studio to create content based on its properties.
This new studio will be at the forefront of turning Activision and Blizzard properties into not only film series, but also possible television adaptations. First in line is a tv series based on Skylanders, with a Call of Duty movie also being planned. Activision has also said that there may be a Call of Duty franchise being developed for tv.
It should be noted that the Warcraft movie is not being developed by this studio, and is instead a collaboration between Blizzard and Legendary.
Activision-Blizzard has been on an aggressive expansion campaign over the last few months, and it is rapidly extending its reach into multiple markets. In the weeks since the end of Tokyo Game Show, the company has announced additional investments in eSports; as well as buying over Candy Crush developer King Digital Entertainment for close to $6 billion.
Video game studios getting into the movie business is nothing new. There have been numerous attempts at turning games into movies, although most tend to bomb at the box office. Although, this could possibly mean that a Starcraft or Diablo movie could be in the works.
