According to the legendary 1989 sci-fi movie Back To The Future II, flying cars, tiny reactors, hover boards, food hydrators and many more hi-tech products are supposed to exist by 2015. Some of these predictions did become reality which include the self-lacing shoes that were revealed yesterday by Nike and Michael J. Fox who played Marty McFly in the movie.
Truth to be told, it was widely known that Nike is already working on self-lacing system – or power laces, as it called in the movie – for quite some time. Last year, the company has been granted a patent for such system and its well-known designer Tinker Hatfield who designed the very shoes that was worn by McFly in the movie – called Nike Mag – has also talked about it earlier this year.
As excited as this news might be, the self-lacing 2015 Nike Mag will be a limited edition product and will be auctioned off in 2016 with all the proceeds going to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research just like the 2011 release of Nike Mag. Even without power laces, the 2011 release which involved only 1,500 pairs has managed to raise USD 4.7 million for the foundation.
That being said though, Nike has stated it is actually testing the system in various sports. Who knows, your next running shoes or football boot might feature power laces. Great Scott!
