Uber does not appear to be fazed by mounting pressure from taxi companies here in Malaysia. The ride-sharing service has quietly updated its website with details for Uber XL, which is essentially Uber X with larger capacity vehicles.
Uber XL is aimed at larger groups traveling together. The service guarantees vehicles with a capacity of six people or greater. This generally means that ordering an Uber XL will result in the car being an MPV or van. Of course, this also means that the ride itself will cost more.
The base price of an Uber XL ride is RM2.50, a whole ringgit more than hailing an Uber X. The fare is similarly increased to RM0.40 per minute or RM0.75 per kilometre. Considering that the ride is for groups of six or more people, the minor price increase shouldn’t be a factor. Unless there are some people who really, really want all that extra space to themselves.
Calling an Uber XL ride is no different from any other Uber ride, and the option will be appearing under its own tab in the Uber app. An Uber spokesman has said that the new service already has drivers on the street, and people are already using the service on the streets.
