One of Xiaomi’s most exciting products besides its range of smartphones is the Yi Action Camera. Released earlier this year, this tiny cam is a much cheaper alternative to the GoPro – which quickly made it very popular among consumers. And, it appears that an official launch is imminent here in Malaysia.
Sporting a 16MP Sony Exmor R sensor an an Arabella A7LS chip, the Yi Action Cam is Xiaomi’s strong first entry into the world of action cameras. Developed by Xiaoyi, one of Xiaomi’s ecosystem partners, this action cam has shaken the industry with its incredibly low price point – the Yi Action Cam retails for just 399 Yuan (about RM265) – and more importantly, its performance which can be seen in its video samples here. It is no surprise that the Yi Action Camera is one of the most actively traded item in Malaysia’s burgeoning e-commerce sites (as well as our forums’ Garage Sales).
Last weekend, Xiaomi Malaysia has announced a search for 10 Mi fans in Malaysia to experience the Yi Action Camera for themselves. Selected participants are required to record, edit and upload a 60-second clip of themselves doing their favourite outdoor sports with the Yi Action Cam and stand a chance to win one for themselves – complete with “related accessories” which is likely to be the monopod and waterproof case.
While the event listing has mentioned that this is not an indication that the Yi Action Camera will be launched in Malaysia, there are a few factors that indicate that a Malaysian launch is imminent in the next month or so. The company’s search for Mi Fans to try out the camera strongly hints at a pre-launch marketing campaign to drive up excitement of its local availability. It is also over six months since the global launch of the camera, which means that sales of the device has stabilised enough for the company to consider expanding its availability in other markets.
We’ll be keeping an eye out on more details, but for now, if you’re interested to be one of the lucky 10 to try out the Yi Action Cameras for yourself, more information can be found here.
