For those of you who are using a Nexus device, it’s time to check for a software update because Google is now rolling out the “sweetest, smartest Android version yet” – Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
The update is available starting today on selected Nexus devices, namely the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 and Nexus Player. It will be available via an over the air update, so check the Settings app for a software update now.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow brings a host of changes to your Android smartphones and tablets. There is a new “Now on Tap” feature that provides you with assistance no matter what app you are in. Just tap and hold the home button, and Now on Tap will provide you with relevant information depending on what you are doing. For example if you receive an email about meeting a friend at the zoo, Now on Tap will assist you by providing links to information about the zoo, shortcuts to relevant apps, and suggest that you create a calendar entry for the event.
On top of new features, Google also enhanced the operating system with better privacy, and better battery life. Android Marshmallow has a new permission model for apps, so you can pick and choose which permission to grant for apps at the time of use; you can easily turn off/on permission for any app, at any time. As for the battery life, Google has introduced two new features in Marshmallow to help conserve battery and give you a longer battery life – Doze automatically goes to deep sleep to conserve power, while App Standby puts your seldom used apps into reduced activity state to conserve battery for the apps you use more frequently.
