Alongside the new Google Nexus devices announced today, Google also introduced a new, comprehensive protection plan for Nexus devices that even covers accidental damage.
Called the Nexus Protect, this is Google’s direct response to Apple’s AppleCare+ which has been around for several years now. Like AppleCare+, Nexus Protect not only covers “mechanical breakdown” over the course of the Nexus device’s life, but also “accidental damage” such as when you drop your device. And like AppleCare+, the duration of protection for Nexus Protect is two years.
What’s different here is in its price: Nexus Protect will cost $89 (about RM397) with a purchase of the premium Nexus 6P, or $69 (about RM308) with the Nexus 5X. This is significantly lower than the $129 Apple charges for AppleCare+ for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. That being said, Google did not specify if users will need to pay a deductible when sending the device in for repair; Apple charges a $99 deductible for each warranty claim.
Naturally, Nexus Protect will only be available first in the US for the new Nexus smartphones, and will gradually roll out to other markets where Nexus smartphones are sold in the Google Play Store.
