Electronic Arts has announced that the open beta for Star Wars Battlefront will go live from 8 – 12 October for all PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The beta test will feature three game modes with greatly varying map sizes; from 40 player battles to tiny two-man co-op missions.
The three maps available for the Star Wars Battlefront open beta will be the massive 40 player Battle of Hoth, the smaller 8 v 8 Dropzone on Sullust, and the two-player Survival Mission on Tatooine. Hoth is likely to be the most impressive game mode as it is taken from the iconic battle in The Empire Strikes Back. As with the movie, the Imperials are trying to break through the Rebel defenses to destroy a shield generator. It features giant AT-AT walkers, and the Rebel Snowspeeders used to bring them down with Tow cables.
Unfortunately, progress in the Star Wars Battlefront beta will not carry over to the actual game; and players are capped at level five. DICE has warned that the beta is an opportunity for the developers to test various aspects of the infrastructure and network; which could result in interruptions during the beta period.
In addition to the beta test, EA is offering the Battlefront Companion during the same time period. The Battlefront Companion is an online card game called Base Command, which allows players to unlock in-game credits ahead of the game. These credits can be used to buy Star cards, weapons, and other unlocks.
Interested players can begin pre-loading the Star Wars Battlefront beta on 7 October in preparation for the open beta. Star Wars Battlefront will launch on 17 November on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Origin on the PC.
