When it was first announced at Computex 2015 few months ago, very little details regarding ASUS ZenWatch 2 were made known to the world even though we managed to try it ourselves at the event. ASUS promises to reveal more details at IFA 2015 though and true enough, plenty of new information regarding the Android Wear-based smartwatch were finally revealed at the company’s IFA briefing yesterday.
One such information is the processor that powers the ZenWatch 2 which comes in the form of 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 for both 1.63 and 1.45-inch models. At the same time, ASUS has also equipped both models with 512 MB of RAM as well as 4GB eMMC as their internal storage.
Protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, they are also equipped with AMOLED panels. The display on the 1.63-inch model has a resolution of 320 x 320 while the display resolution on the 1.45-inch model is slightly lower at 280 x 280. There are also some differences in terms of battery capacity too as they come with 400 mAh and 300 mAh battery respectively which provide up to 2 days of battery life.
Apart from having two different sizes, the ZenWatch 2’s stainless steel case will be made available in three different colors including Silver, Gunmetal, and Rose Gold. Users will also able to choose from 18 different straps for their ZenWatch 2. Furthermore, users are able to switch between 50 different watch face that can be selected right in the watch itself but for further customization, users are also able to design and implement their own watch face through the watch’s FaceDesigner smartphone app.
While the ZenWatch 2 is not equipped with a heart rate monitor, the IP67 water-resistant smartwatch does come with built-in pedometer which works together with ASUS own Wellness smartphone app to help users keep track of their fitness activity and goals. ZenWatch 2 owners are also able to send short messages, emojis, and drawings to each other using a new feature called ZenWatch Message.
As for its availability and pricing, the new ASUS ZenWatch 2 will be released in Europe starting this coming October at EUR 149 (RM 707) for the 1.63-inch model while the smaller 1.45-inch model surprisingly will cost slightly higher at EU 169 (RM 802). No words on its availability or pricing for Malaysia at the moment, unfortunately.
