It looks like Samsung has decided to reveal its latest smartwatches ahead of their official unveiling at IFA 2015 in Berlin. Dubbed the Samsung Gear S2 and S2 classic, these are Tizen-based smartwatches with a circular display; a markedly different design choice over their predecessor, the Samsung Gear S.
As more and more manufacturers come up with smartwatches with a circular display, it’s not surprising to see Samsung doing the same. Incidentally, these are also Samsung’s best-designed smartwatches to date, with an impressively thin 11.4mm body. Samsung has been hitting some design highs in its latest products, and from its official press images it looks like it’s got another winner here with the Gear S2.
In addition, unlike other smartwatches, the Gear S2 features a rotating bezel, which works as an input method along with the home and back buttons, as well as the touch display. It will be interesting to see how intuitive it would be to control the smartwatch with the bezel.
In terms of hardware, both the Gear S2 and S2 classic have a 1.2-inch 360 x 360 resolution circular Super AMOLED touch display, a 1.0GHz dual-core processor paired with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and a 250mAh battery. Interestingly, there will also be a 3G variant of the Gear S2. It will have a bigger 300mAh battery along with an e-SIM, which allows users to change telco providers without having to switch SIM cards.
The retail prices and availability of the Samsung Gear S2 and S2 classic have not been announced by the Korean giants yet. Chances are, these will be made known at IFA 2015, which is set to take place in the next few days.
