Acer has announced two new slim and inexpensive laptops: the Aspire One Cloudbook 11 and 14. With the most affordable model going for only US$169 (about RM655), these are perhaps one of the most affordable Windows laptops in the market. However, in order to bring down the price, certain sacrifices had to be made.
Just like Google Chromebook machines, the Aspire One Cloudbooks are not particularly well-equipped. Specification-wise, these affordable laptops are equipped with an Intel Celeron processor paired with 2GB of RAM, an 11-inch or 14-inch 1366 x 768 resolution display, and a thickness of only 17.9mm.
In terms of storage, it’s the same case. The 11-inch Cloudbook is available in 16GB and 32GB variants, while the 14-inch model can be equipped with 32GB or 64GB of storage. Seeing how these storage sizes are pretty limited, Acer will throw in one year subscription of Microsoft’s Office 365 Personal. Depending on which model you get, the company will also include 100GB to 1TB of OneDrive storage.
Fortunately, Acer did not sacrifice much in terms of connectivity. It has USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and HDMI ports, not to mention the inclusion of an SD card reader. While these Chromebooks do not have very capable hardware, it would be perfect for students or anyone who is on a tight budget.
At the time of writing, no word yet from Acer if these Aspire One Cloudbooks will be made available in Malaysia. As for its retail price in the US, the Cloudbook 11 starts from US$169 (about RM655), while the Cloudbook 14 will go from US$199 (approximately RM770).
