Two days, two new phone announcements. Just after comparing the brand new OnePlus 2 to the 2015 flagship smartphones, Motorola announced two new Moto X smartphones – a mid-range Snapdragon 615-powered Moto X Play, and a flagship Moto X Style that brings pure Android to users. So how do these two devices compare to other devices within their range?

The Motorola Moto X Style may not be as powerful as its competitors if you are looking at just the specs alone, but it has a pretty affordable price tag of US$400, which is about RM1,527. Of course, the price might change when (if it ever) it comes to Malaysia to reflect GST and other charges, so hopefully it will remain affordable. It uses the same Snapdragon 808 processor as the LG G4 paired with 3GB of RAM, which is priced at RM2,499 (freebies included).
It must be said here too that the Moto X Style looks like an unlikely contender against the OnePlus 2 and the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro. These two feature high-spec hardware for about 40% less than an iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6, making them very attractive to consumers. The X Style’s aggressive pricing is a very pleasant surprise.
But Motorola’s selling point isn’t in the hardware alone. Both devices boast a pure Android experience so you can enjoy all the goodness that Android offers, without extra features to weigh the OS down. There is also Motorola Moto Maker (which is sadly not available in Malaysia) that let users customise their Moto X to their liking – whether it is the colours on the front, back, accent, or even the case. You can even opt for custom engraving to truly make it your phone. Motorola has even given both Moto X models a water repellent nano-coating so it can withstand some splashes of water.
Another major selling point on both devices is a long battery life. There is a very generous 3,630mAh battery on the Moto X Play that boasts up to 48 hours battery life, and while the battery on the Moto X Style may not be as big (only 3,000mAh), the device is equipped with TurboPower, making it the “world’s fastest charging smartphone”. Motorola claims that TurboPower can give users 10 hours of power with just 15 minutes of charging.
Motorola paid a lot of attention to the camera this time round. The company says that the Moto X Style has one of the best cameras in the industry. There’s also a review on DPReview, which gave the phone a score of 83/100 for photo and video. Overall, the Moto X Style has the second highest DxOMark Mobile score, right behind the Samsung Galaxy S6 – and that’s very impressive even on paper. The Moto X Play also packs a 21MP camera, though likely with lesser features than the X Style.
