Fallout 4 has become one of the most anticipated games of 2015, which is impressive considering that it was only announced a couple of weeks ago. One fan tried to pre-order the game using bottlecaps – which are the legal currency in the game – and Bethesda has decided to honour the sale; but only because he was the first one to try it.
Fallout fan GatorMacheteJr, a.k.a Seth, posted his unusual plan on imgur, which quickly went viral among gamers. His letter to Bethesda included the fact that he does not know the exchange rate for bottlecaps to US dollars, and he has given them his entire life savings of bottlecaps. While he did not provide an accurate count of how many bottlecaps were in the box, he estimates it to be about 2,240 caps; which represents seven and a half years of drinking beer.
His original post said that he was hoping that the post would become popular enough that Besthesda’s PR department would be unable to refuse his plan. It turns out that it worked.
Bethesda Community Leader, Matt Grandstaff informed Seth that he deserves recognition for being the first person to have tried to pre-ordered Fallout 4 using in-game currency. The game developer has promised to send Seth a copy of the game or a Steam code, whichever he prefers.
Of course, this stunt only worked because Seth was the first and only person to have shipped more than 2,000 bottlecaps to the developer’s office. Which means that nobody else is going to be able to pull this off. On the other hand, there is nothing stopping people from trying again in another seven to eight years when Fallout 5 is announced.
