HBO’s Game of Thrones series continually sets new records for piracy, especially when the season finale rolls around. This week was no exception with the final episode of the fifth season drawing in 1.5 million downloads in under eight hours. It has also set the record for the most people sharing the same file at the same time.
It is unsurprising that people are curious to find out what happens in the live action adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series; despite HBO beginning to warn individual downloaders to cut it out. The series has begun to greatly deviate from the books, and many characters that are still alive in the novels have already been killed off. In other words, people who have read the books may not know precisely what will happen. Not to mention that the series is progressing faster than Martin is capable of writing novels.
This time around, the record for the swarm record has also been broken, with 258,131 people sharing a single torrent at the same time. Torrent tracking site TorrentFreak expects the number of downloads for the season finale to cross 10 million by next week. The usual countries downloading the file are back at it, with the US, UK, Canada, and India leading the pack.
