Bethesda has announced the return of Doom. This isn’t a remake of the original version of the game, but rather the completed form of Doom 4 that was stuck in development hell since 2014. To be fair, nothing of that game survived the development process; but it does show how long fans have been waiting for a proper continuation to the series.
This new Doom will run on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC; a change from the PC exclusive nature that the series used to have. Naturally, the focus will be on multiplayer matches; and the Bethesda preview focused on the many ways people will be able to frag each other during Deathmatches. The weapons are bound to bring back memories for those who played the previous Doom games with franchise stalwarts like the BFG returning to wreck havoc.
Weapons also have some new features added to them. It appears that this new Doom will allow players to customise their weapons to an extent. There is not much information about this, but the on-stage demo appeared to show the player adding a scope to his weapon in the middle of the game. Modular weapons in games isn’t a new thing, but it is quickly becoming a staple feature of the FPS genre.
This is good news for people who are tired of increasingly repetitive military style shooters. If anything, it is good to see Doom return to its rightful place in gaming. Hopefully it will not be a disappointment; all it needs is wanton multiplayer violence.
