What’s more impressive than a television set that is as thin or maybe thinner a mobile phone? A 55” OLED TV that is less than 1mm thin of course. LG Display recently showed off a new concept television that measures at less than a millimetre thin, and can stick to the wall via a magnetic mat – say goodbye to bulky brackets on your wall.
It’s not a final product of course, the TV is a proof of concept by LG Display, a subsidiary of LG that focuses on making displays. It weighs just under 2kg, which makes it possible to just stick it to the wall using nothing but magnets. Want to move it elsewhere? Just peel the screen of its magnetic mat and relocate the TV, I’m sure it’s slim and light enough to do so effortlessly.
The 1mm-thin “wallpaper” TV was showcased at an event held by the company earlier this week. LG believes that OLED is going to be the future for display technology. Not only does it allow manufacturers to make breathtakingly thin displays like the “wallpaper TV”, it also allows the displays to be curved – like the curved TVs from popular manufacturers including LG and Samsung. LG says that OLED is a desirable choice not only for TVs, but also for other products such as wearables.
Sadly though, OLED displays are not cheap to manufacturer. LG wants to change that by being the first to mass-produce large-screen OLEDs for TVs. They said that they expect to sell 600,000 OLED TV panels this year, and 1.5 million next year, so hopefully in time to come, normal consumers like us will finally be able to afford one of these fancy television sets.
