While there are plenty of smartphone manufacturers emerging from China, it looks like Apple has soared above all of them in their home country. According to IDC’s Q1 2015 report, Apple is now the top smartphone manufacturer in China. As for everything as a whole in in the country, the smartphone market in China has declined for the first time in six consecutive years.
According to IDC’s report, the overall smartphone shipment in China for the first three months of the year came in at 98.8 million. That is down 4% year-on-year and down 8% compared to the previous quarter. Despite that, China remains as the biggest smartphone market in the world and Apple tops the lists with 14.7% market share.
“Smartphones are becoming increasingly saturated in China. China is oftentimes thought of as an emerging market but the reality is that the vast majority of phones sold in China today are smartphones, similar to other mature markets like the US, UK, Australia and Japan. Just like these markets, convincing existing users as well as feature phone users to upgrade to new smartphones will now be the key to further growth in the China market.” – Kitty Fox, Managing Director at IDC China.
Xiaomi dropped to the second place with 13.7% market share for Q1 2015. That’s not bad though, Xiaomi sees a year-on-year growth of over 42%, however, Apple’s growth of 62.1% managed to surpass Xiaomi. Taking the third, fourth and fifth places are Huawei, Samsung and Lenovo with 11.4%, 9.7% and 8.2% respectively.
Of course, these numbers does not include sales of Samsung’s latest and hottest smartphones ever – the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. The report also does not include the sales of the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, which went on sale just last week. Will Apple maintain its top position in the next quarter of 2015? The next quarter’s report will definitely be very interesting.
