Samsung has unveiled new lineups of SD and microSD cards, the PRO Plus and EVO Plus. Not surprisingly, the PRO Plus lineup is the higher-end memory card. It is capable of read speed up to 95MB/s and a whopping write speed up to 90MB/s.
With these read and write speeds, the PRO Plus memory cards are UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) and Speed Class 10 compliant. With more and more smartphones now capable of 4K video recording, the PRO Plus lineup is more relevant than ever. Professional photographers will also find it compelling, although it is only available in 32GB and 64GB capacities.
The EVO Plus line, on the other hand, isn’t as fast as the PRO Plus lineup. That being said, it still offers read and write speed of up to 80MB/s and 20MB/s respectively, which is plenty fast. In terms of capacity, it will be made available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB sizes.
Interestingly, Samsung claims that the PRO Plus and EVO Plus lineups are “designed to be compatible with any device with an SD or microSD slot.” While this may be true for modern devices, these are after all SDXC flash cards, a format which was introduced back in 2009. Devices made before 2009 might not necessarily work with these memory cards.
The microSD version of the Samsung PRO Plus and EVO Plus lineups will be made available this month, while the SD card counterparts will be on sale at a later date. Local availability and pricing of these products have not been announced yet.
