A new teaser released by Samsung could indicate that the Samsung Gear S‘ successor will feature a circular display. The teaser above is actually taken from the Korean giant’s press release that announced the release of the Software Development Kit (SDK) for the next generation Gear smartwatch.
As Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch still seems to bear the Gear moniker, it’s probably safe to assume that it will still run on the Tizen OS. More likely than not, the early release of the SDK is to ensure that most apps based on Tizen will be able to work well on the new Gear’s circular display.
It’s worth noting that as many as two separate patents concerning a smartwatch have been filled by Samsung in the past. One of the two patents involves some sort of gesture control, while the other one is a rotatable ring that works as an input method. If these patents do make it into the new Gear smartwatch, it could be an interesting device.
Smartwatches with a circular display has become much more common ever since the Motorola Moto 360 was introduced. It has gotten to the point that a square smartwatch (such as the Apple Watch) is starting to seem rare. Of course, there are also other manufacturers which have decided to stick with a square display, like the Pebble Time and its steel variant.
In any case, Samsung’s decision to adopt a circular display for its new Gear smartwatch is an interesting prospect. After all, the patents that we have seen in the past could make it into this wearable.
