[Update] Google apologises for the image, says it’s made by a Map Maker user, not Google employee.
This is definitely the weirdest thing happening on the internet tonight. If you browse Google Maps to Rawalpindi, a city located in northern Pakistan, you will be greeted with an image of an Android mascot peeing on the Apple’s logo.
Located precisely here (N 33°30’52.5″ E 73°03’33.2″), the image was discovered by Team Android, and is making its rounds on the internet. If you would like to see it for yourself, you better check out the link above before it gets removed. The above imagery is available on Google Maps for the web, as well as for mobile, including Google Maps app for iOS of course.
We have no idea how that image managed to make its way into Google Maps though. Sadly though, that particular area doesn’t support Street View, so there’s no way to identify if there is indeed a landscape of an Android logo peeing on an Apple logo though, we highly doubt so. If you switch to Earth view, the image would disappear.
While it seems rather childish that someone would put that on Google Maps, you have to admit, at least you can end your Friday with a little laugh. Check it out for yourself via this link.
Update: In a statement to The Washington Post, Google apologises for the image of Android mascot peeing on Apple’s logo. Google says that it’s submitted by a user via Map Maker, not a creation of a Google employee.
“We’re sorry for this inappropriate user-created content; we’re working to remove it quickly. We also learn from these issues, and we’re constantly improving how we detect, prevent and handle bad edits” – Mara Harris, Google.
