Swiss army knife maker Victorinox is joining other luxury watch manufacturers in developing a wearable. However, the company is not exactly calling it a smartwatch, but rather something approaching the concept. It is too early not to figure out what it might mean, but any company that can fit that many functions into a pocket knife should be interesting to watch.
Victorinox already makes a line of luxury watches to match its world famous utility knives, and this next step into the high tech world comes as no real surprise. Its Swiss Army Knives already include several high-tech options like USB drives, digital altimeters, LED flashlights, and fingerprint readers. This is in addition to the iconic array of knives, screwdrivers, and scissors that the Swiss Army Knife is famous for.
This unnamed wearable will apparently remain a regular watch for the most part. Victorinox Chief Executive Carl Elsener said that “We’re looking … for the opportunity to expand the functions of our watches. But at the same time the watch must have a long lifespan compared to a mobile phone or a computer.”
The Victorinox not-a-smartwatch will be announced later this year, or in early 2016. Until then, we have plenty of other luxury watch brands getting in on the smartwatch bandwagon.
