Taiwanese processor manufacturer, MediaTek has unveiled a new family of processing chips called “Helio”. There are two series of chips in Helio – Helio X and Helio P. With the former catering to high-end smartphones while the latter will be powering budget devices.

The ‘X’ in the Helio X series stands for ‘Extreme’ performance and it will be the powerhouse chip that will be in charge of processing needs required in higher-end smartphones. On the other hand, Helio P processors are touted to offer ‘Premium’ performance, delivering longer battery life while not compromising on processing power. All MediaTek’s Helio chips will include support for 4K playback, H.265 video playback, 120Hz screen refresh rates, and support for cameras capable of capturing 1080p videos at 480 frames per second.

The first chip to be introduced under the Helio X series is the Helio X10 (MT6795W), a 28nm chip that has an octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor capable of clock speeds up to 2.2GHz. Not only that, support for 4G LTE can also be found on the X10. On the other hand, the company has not introduced any Helio P chips yet, but they did state that future Helio chips will have 20nm models based on the ARM Cortex-A72 architecture.

The x10 from the Helio X series will be launched in the middle of April 2015. It will only be a matter of time when Helio P processors make their debut.
