It looks like our neighbouring country is set to receive the Xiaomi Redmi 2 as well. The successor to the Redmi 1S will be launching in Singapore on the 17th of March 2015. More interestingly, it is the regular one instead of the Enhanced Edition; which may or may not matter to us here in Malaysia.
If we were to look back at the history of Xiaomi’s product launches in our region, we usually get the same device that Singapore does. More likely than not, we will also be receiving the regular Redmi 2 instead of the superior Enhanced Edition which has double the RAM and internal storage at 2GB and 16GB respectively.
Xiaomi, however, has its own reason to not bring in the Enhanced Edition to Singapore. “The Redmi 2 Enhanced Edition was a special run of 100,000 devices that we sold during Chinese New Year in China. We don’t have any plans to launch it in Singapore at this point in time,” the company said.
In any case, the regular Redmi 2 is still quite a compelling budget smartphone without the extra RAM and storage space. It has a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage that can be expanded with a microSD card up to 32GB, LTE connectivity, and 8MP rear and 2MP front-facing cameras.
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 retails at exactly the same price of the Redmi 1S in Singapore. Taking this into consideration, the Redmi 2 might be priced at RM419 for our market, which is the asking price of the Redmi 1S. We’ll find out soon enough as Xiaomi will be launching a new device in Malaysia tomorrow.
