It shouldn’t be a surprise by now that Samsung will be announcing its latest flagship Galaxy smartphone at MWC 2015 next month. With a plethora of rumours circulating in the past few weeks, Samsung has now begun sending out invites for the big launch event, teasing what appears to be an evolution to the curved screen we first saw on the Galaxy Note Edge.
Samsung will be holding the launch event on 1 March 2015, the day before MWC 2015 officially kicks off, and interestingly, on the same day that HTC is expected to announce its latest One flagship smartphone, codenamed Hima. It’s amazing how a year can change fortunes. In 2014, Samsung was the king of the mobile industry while HTC seems to have run out of ideas (and money). Fast forward a year later, Samsung is the cornered animal looking to bounce back at the competition, and HTC is finally turning a profit.
The Galaxy S6 teaser is visually similar to the Galaxy Note Edge’s curved display
The new Galaxy, more than likely to be called the Galaxy S6, will utilise Samsung’s know-how in curved displays as its gambit. From the teaser image shared across its social media channels, there is a chance that instead of a two-variant rollout like the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, there would be just one, curved Galaxy S6 model.
The Unpacked event will also likely see another smartwatch from Samsung, running on its Tizen platform. While last year’s Gear S featured a curved display, the new Tizen smartwatch is rumoured to feature a round display, pitting it against more traditional-looking smartwatches such as the Motorola Moto 360 and LG G Watch R.
With the Korean giants facing intense competition on all sides, and the prospect of more disappointing fiscal performances, the first Unpacked event of the year will have to be pretty spectacular.
