Toshiba has come up with an interesting way for people to quickly check the contents of SD cards. The new line of unnamed SD cards will have built in NFC technology that will allow users to instantly preview pictures stored on the card.
The NFC tag will require a smartphone with the appropriate Toshiba SD card app, after which simply tapping the storage device to the phone will cause it to display 12 thumbnails of randomly chosen photos. Whether this is actually useful is questionable, but the company seems to think that the ability to quickly sift through SD cards will be worth it. Although, that being said, it doesn’t sound like a bad idea for people who own a lot of these things.
Alongside these NFC equipped SD cards will be a range of WiFi enabled SD cards; that Toshiba says will make transferring pictures from camera to computer so much easier. While many newer cameras also have WiFi connectivity, it is apparently meant to fill in the gaps left by cameras that do not have wireless capabilities. Likely for DSLRs that still often lack wireless connectivity. Of course, the WiFi on the card doesn’t work without power; so it will still need to be plugged into something to work.
