Google has a modular phone project and now, Haier wants to introduce the same modular concept on televisions. The manufacturer unveiled at CES 2015 that that they are working on an evolving TV that gives users the freedom to update their TVs one component at a time.
This is not the first “evolving TV” we’ve seen, Samsung has a similar concept on its Smart TVs that allow users to upgrade their television with what the company calls an Evolution Kit. However, Evolution Kit only allows you to upgrade the insides of an old Samsung TV. The one announced by Haier has got more options like ability to upgrade their TV to Full HD or even UHD resolution.
On top of that, Haier also wants to make their televisions even smarter than typical ones. There’s a suite of health-related feature on its TV that can track a user’s blood pressure, weight and sleep quality. With an additional camera, it can even track your physical activities so if you’re slouching or of you’re sitting too close to the TV, it’ll give you an alert.
Haier did not announce any pricing or availability of its modular TV. I’m not quite sure how I feel about a TV that can watch you as you’re watching it, and then nags you when you sit too close.
