It was previously revealed that Samsung’s latest flagship devices, the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, were equipped with an excellent Sony IMX 240 camera sensor. However, certain users are reporting that their device has an ISOCELL camera sensor instead, which is Samsung’s very own camera module.
One would argue that the ISOCELL camera sensor is inferior to the IMX 240 unit. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 – which was equipped with the latter sensor – proved to be a very capable shooter, while the Samsung Galaxy S5 was decked out with an ISOCELL sensor. While it is by no means a bad sensor, it’s not exactly the best either.
Of course, hardware is merely one part of the equation of a camera’s performance; software plays an equally important role as well. Since Samsung did not explicitly state that all of its Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are equipped with a Sony IMX 240 sensor, it’s possible that both camera sensors are equally good, although this is merely a speculation.
In any case, it’s hard to say if one camera sensor is better than the other without further testing. It’s also entirely possible that this is merely a software bug and all Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are equipped with an IMX 240 sensor. We’d just have to wait and see if the Korean giant will clear up any doubt with an official statement.
