Early this morning, Dell has updated its online store to reflect price changes due to the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax. The 6% GST charge has been added to all of the company’s products, along with a “Price inclusive of 6% GST” label.
Like most computer manufacturers, Dell has opted to retain the prices of their products and pass on the 6% charge to consumers. This might bring an impact to the company’s sales from here on out, as their products have had a substantial price bump.
The Alienware 17 non-touch version is a great example. Previously, the product was sold for RM6,299 for the base model but now, a 6% GST charge has changed its price tag, making it cost RM6,677. For home users, the Inspiron 14 5000 series is now sold for RM2,437 instead of RM2,299. On the other hand, the XPS series built mainly for power users also gets a RM312 price increase. From its former pricing of RM5,199, the powerhouse laptop is now being sold for RM5,511 on Dell’s online store.
Other products like printers, monitors and accessories also see a 6% price increase. Come what may, the 6% GST charge might take a toll on Dell’s product sales as the price hike can amount to more than RM300 depending on the product purchased. That being said, Dell isn’t the only company looking at increased prices as even premium priced Apple products are also affected.
