Xiaomi Malaysia has officially unveiled its latest product for the Malaysian market, the Redmi 2. The dual-4G device will be available from 17 March for a retail price of RM449.
The Redmi 2 is the company’s latest smartphone in Malaysia. Powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM, the latest Redmi phone packs a 4.7-inch 720p fully-laminated IPS display that’s protected by Dragontrail glass, as well as 8MP rear and 2MP front cameras. It also features 8GB of storage with a microSD card slot that officially supports up to 32GB cards – though some users have reported that 64GB cards also run perfectly on the device. Finally, the Redmi 2 also runs on MIUI 6.
Besides that, the Redmi 2 also features a 2,200mAh removable battery with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 1.0, which is said to increase charging speeds by up to 20%. The Redmi 2 is also a dual-standby 4G device, where both SIM slots support Cat 4 LTE. There’s also plenty of software enhancements that make it super easy to switch between SIMs without having to physically switch the card. For instance, on the Phone app’s dialler and Messaging app, there are two call or send buttons – one for each SIM. You can also rename these SIMs to display more than just the carrier name (Work and Personal, for example).
The new Xiaomi Redmi 2 will be priced at RM449, which is RM30 more than the Redmi 1S; this older Redmi smartphone will not be sold at mi.com/my anymore. The first sale for the new Redmi 2 will take place on 17 March at 12pm – the same time as the Singapore market. In fact, the official product page is already up at Xiaomi Malaysia’s official website, where it is stated that the only colour currently available in Malaysia is white.
On questions regarding the Enhanced Edition, Xiaomi’s Donovan Sung has reiterated that the Redmi 2 Enhanced Edition – which featured 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage – was a one-off production run of 100,000 units in China for the Chinese New Year celebration only. The company says that there is no plans to make the device again – though it says it is open to feedback.
