Unveiled alongside the new Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is the Xperia M4 Aqua, an upper mid-range smartphone that looks remarkably similar to the Xperia Z3, the company’s current flagship. The M4 Aqua may not be the successor to the Xperia Z3, but it does carry some of the Z3’s traits.
Those who are familiar with the Xperia Z3 will immediately see elements of it in the M4 Aqua. Sony’s OmniBalance design language translates well to this new smartphone, complete with the slightly curved sides that should help with ergonomics. It is also pretty slim, measuring only 7.3mm.
The M4 Aqua has a lot of similarities to the Xperia Z3, right down to the dedicated camera shutter button and a tempered glass on the front. What makes it different, however, is the choice of material. While the Xperia Z3 has a metal frame and a glass back, the M4 Aqua is mostly made out of plastic; which isn’t necessarily a bad thing judging by the looks of the new smartphone.
Specification wise, the M4 Aqua has a 5.2-inch 720p IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor under its hood, 2GB of RAM, up to 16GB of expandable internal storage, LTE connectivity, and a 2,400mAh battery that is claimed to last up to two days of usage. In the camera department, it has a 13MP Exmor RS rear camera and a 5MP front-facing shooter. It’s also worth noting that the M4 Aqua is waterproof and can be submerged in 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes.
The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua will be available worldwide this Spring in black, white, coral, and silver. It will retail at 299 Euro, which is approximately RM1,210.
