It shouldn’t surprise you that Samsung was working on an Edge variant of its Galaxy S6, as rumours of this device circulated months ago. The Galaxy S6 edge is now official, alongside its more traditional-looking Galaxy S6 at the company’s Unpacked event here in Barcelona.
Hardware-wise, the Galaxy S6 edge is virtually identical to the Galaxy S6. It’s powered by the same Exynos 7420 octa-core processor (4x 2.1GHz Cortex-A57 + 4x 1.5GHz Cortex-A53) with Mali-T760 GPU and 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and sports similar hardware including the new UFS 2.0 flash storage options of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, LTE Cat 6 support, and even the 16MP F1.9 Smart OIS rear and 5MP F1.9 front camera sensors.
The main difference is, of course, with the display. The Galaxy S6 edge’s display curves dramatically on both sides, lending it a look that is unseen on any other smartphone. Yet, the display remains similar to the Galaxy S6’s 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, protected by Gorilla Glass 4.
By curving both sides of the display, the Galaxy S6 edge becomes thinner (and hence more comfortable to hold) than the Galaxy S6, which is the opposite of what the Galaxy Note Edge achieved compared to the Galaxy Note 4.
This time around, Samsung has made sure the Edge Screen is usable for both left- and right-handers. In the Edge Screen settings, users can easily enable the Edge Screen on the left or right side. And, unlike the Galaxy Note Edge’s independent Edge Screen, the S6 edge attempts to organically integrate its Edge Screen into something truly beneficial.
As such, the Edge Screen now has two main functions: People Edge and Information Stream. People Edge basically gives you easy access to five frequently-used contacts, while the Information Stream is essentially a refreshed version of the Edge Screen from the Note Edge. Both of these functions are covered more extensively in our hands on post.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge will be available in four colours, including black, white, gold and an exclusive Emerald Green which will only be available on the Galaxy S6 Edge. Just like the Galaxy S6, no pricing details were revealed at the launch event earlier.
