Gamers take note, Maybank is currently blocking all transactions from Steam. This is apparently because the world’s most popular gaming platform is classified as a high-risk website. It is hard to say just how many people have had their banking information stolen by people who just want to buy games, but it looks like Maybank is not taking any chances here.
The issue was first noticed on social media when several Steam users attempted to buy games, only to find their transactions rejected. Some contacted Maybank customer service and were told that the transactions are blocked due to fact the service is considered a high-risk site that does not work with the Maybank Secure Online Shopping feature. However, Steam is not being singled out here. Lowyat.NET was told by the customer service line that all online gaming websites are currently blocked by Maybank for the same reason.
Maybank card holders can still call the Maybank customer service line to unblock the cards for the transaction. Although this will require a bit more work than most would want to go through to buy their PC games. However, at least one acquaintance who tried to get his card unblocked was told that it cannot be done and that he should instead use a card from a different bank.
With that in mind, it looks like Maybank card holders have limited options if they want to buy games from Steam. The gaming platform stopped supporting PayPal for Malaysians when it switched prices over to Ringgit Malaysia, and the only non-banking option left are e-Club points. At the very least, it looks like the best option for buying Steam games now is to not use a Maybank card to do it.
Those who want to unblock their Maybank cards to buy games online can call the customer service line at 1-300-88-6688.
