Qualcomm has been on the defensive against rumours that the Snapdragon 810 processor runs too hot for actual use, and it looks like it is going to lose that argument. A HTC One M9 test shows the smartphone heating up to an impressive 55.4-degrees Celsius while running GFXBench.
Dutch tech site Tweakers first noticed the problem while benchmarking the HTC One M9. The results were not good, and it looks like the embattled Snapdragon 810 is the culprit. To be fair, HTC’s latest smartphone only exceeded the 50-degree mark while running graphics benchmarks; although it still managed to reach 42.5-degrees while running graphics intensive games.
Most smartphones get a little warm when pushed during benchmarks, and the comparison image shows just how much more heat the One M9 puts out under those conditions. 55.4-degrees goes right past uncomfortable to hold and wanders into actually painful to hold territory, but that is not the only problem it faces. Overheating issues also affect battery life. A benchmark shows that the battery life of the HTC One M9 lags behind the current generation of smartphones, and is likely to lag behind the coming lineup of new flagship devices.

HTC’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, Jeff Gordon, took to Twitter to remind fans that the benchmark was done with with unfinalised software. That being said, there is still time before the HTC One M9 is due to appear in the market and with any luck the company will have sorted out this little hiccup before the street date. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see if any of the other smartphones set to run the Snapdragon 810 face the same overheating problem.
