The next Nexus smartphone from Google might just be built by a Chinese manufacturer. All Nexus smartphones to date have always been developed by established brands outside of China, such as LG, Motorola, and of course, Samsung. If the successor to the Google Nexus 6 will be coming from a Chinese smartphone manufacturer, it could indicate a shift in Google’s game plan with its Nexus lineup.
Unfortunately, the rumour did not specify exactly which Chinese smartphone manufacturer that will be partnering with Google to build the next Nexus smartphone. If we were to take a guess, however, Xiaomi seems to be a good candidate, along with Lenovo and even Huawei.
That being said, among the three Chinese manufacturers, Xiaomi is the one that has been making headlines lately. Its current flagship, the Xiaomi Mi Note, proved to be a success among Chinese consumers. On top of that, Xiaomi’s Vice President, Hugo Barra, is an ex-Googler himself, which says a lot.
In any case, this is still after all just a rumour. We won’t even find out who will be partnering with Google until the second half of the year, which is usually when the next Nexus smartphone will be unveiled. Until then, the idea of the Xiaomi Mi Note running on the latest stock Android version does sound mighty tempting.
