Remember the Samsung Galaxy E series that was announced last month when Samsung launched its Galaxy A series in India? Well, it looks like they will be coming soon to Malaysia.
If you think that the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A7 are a little too expensive for a mid-range device, the Galaxy E series might be a better choice for you. It looks similar to the A series with similar specifications, but is made entirely out of plastic instead and naturally, comes with a cheaper price. Already available in India, the Galaxy E5 and E7 are priced at INR19,300 (RM1,080) and INR23,000 (RM1,290) respectively.

From the outside, the Galaxy E series looks pretty much the same as the Galaxy A series, except for a plastic build, a slightly fatter profile, and has that chrome edge design borrowed from older Samsung Galaxy smartphones like the Galaxy S5 and Note 3. Sadly though, despite their plastic build, they do not have a removable back cover, which means that you can’t change the batteries.
This also means that its SIM and microSD slot are placed on the sides like the Galaxy A series, and requires a pin to eject the respective trays.
The SIM and microSD trays are located on the right side of the device, similar to the design of the Galaxy A series
The rest of the design of the phone looks pretty much identical with the A series like volume rocker on the left side of the phone, power button on the right along with the SIM and microSD slots.
Even the sensors, front camera, and location of the LED flash light and speakers at the back are identical with the Galaxy A series, and yes, it has a protruding camera too though, it’s not as obvious as the A series.
The insides is what sets the Galaxy E series apart from the A series. While both series may be mid-range Android smartphones, the E series is slightly lower-end hence, contributing to the slightly more affordable price tag.
The displays of the E7 and E5 may be the same as the A7 and A5 at 5.5” and 5” respectively, but the E series packs a larger battery inside. This is definitely good news since the battery is non-removable. With lower screen resolution on the E7, this could mean that it has a longer battery life too.
One thing to note though, on paper, the Galaxy E7 weighs the same as the Galaxy A7 at 141grams, but holding the E7 on my hands the first time, it felt so light, I thought it was a dummy set. Of course, the material used on the phones also contributes to that factor – the Galaxy A7 felt a lot more solid to hold on to in spite of its slimness.
Interested in the Samsung Galaxy E5 or Galaxy E7? The devices will be coming to Malaysia at a later date and hopefully will be priced lower than the launch price in India because honestly, for its specs, I think it’s more worth it to get the Galaxy A series instead. After conversion, the Galaxy E7 is priced at RM1,290 while the retail price of the Galaxy A5 in Malaysia is only RM1,199. Aside from the display size, both the Galaxy E7 and Galaxy A5 share similar specs – processor, camera, RAM and such, and if I were to pick one, I’d rather go with the one with a premium metal unibody design.
