Xiaomi has already unveiled the Redmi 2, but it looks like a busy January for what is now the world’s most valuable tech startup. The company has just officially announced that its “next flagship product” will be launched on 15 January in Beijing, teasing that this product will be “as thin as a cicada’s wing”.
But what exactly is Xiaomi talking about? Taken literally, this is a cicada:

Recent rumours have pointed to a refreshed Redmi Note smartphone, similar to the recently-refreshed Redmi 2, sporting 2015 hardware. That being said, it doesn’t exactly fit into the grand scheme of being “thinner than a cicada’s wing”. Another wild rumour seems to indicate that Xiaomi is going to enter the laptop scene, with a MacBook Air-esque ultra-slim laptop – which has since been debunked as a fake. Given Xiaomi’s sudden announcement of an air purifier, you’ll never know what’s next for Xiaomi.
Nevertheless, Xiaomi is keeping its cards really close to its chest for this one. Everyone we know at Xiaomi is keeping mum about it, though there was a prevailing sense of genuine excitement about what’s about to be unveiled next week. Could it be the new thinnest smartphone in the world? A thinner MiPad? A MiBook Air? Or a super-slim Mi TV 3, thinner even than the new Sony BRAVIA Android TV announced just a few days ago?
It’s impossible to really tell what’s about to be unveiled, and the suppressed optimism from within Xiaomi is making us pretty excited for 15 January, too.
