Samsung is apparently prepared to listen to users and will be introducing a series of changes to Touchwiz in an effort to improve functions. The new Touchwiz is rumoured to be appearing on the next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, and will begin by eliminating redundant features.
An industry source remarked, “We are aiming to get rid of unnecessary functions and simplify our UI at the level of Google’s Nexus 6.” The basic version of Android is often preferred by users as it often has less clutter, uses fewer system resources, and takes up less storage space. Samsung’s Touchwiz often throws in additional features that go unused, and occasionally duplicates existing Google apps.
How much will be stripped from the current version of Samsung’s variant on Android is unknown, although it is apparently removing unnecessary features. What exactly constitutes an ‘unnecessary feature’ is anyone’s guess.
This may mark the first time that Samsung is removing features and cutting back on Touchwiz. It has traditionally used software to help differentiate the user experience; especially since most smartphones now have similar internals and are quite hard to tell apart on hardware alone. A simplified interface and experience could work to the Korean manufacturer’s advantage in this situation as Android gains more features and becomes more complicated.
