LG has announced the G Flex 2, the next generation of flexible smartphone with a curved display. It includes the new 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, and LG claims it doesnt just curve in one direction, but instead has four separate curves.
The display of the G Flex 2 has been dropped to 5.5-inches from its predecessor’s 6-inch screen, but the resolution has been bumped up to a 1080p full HD display. The rest of the specifications aren’t too unexpected with a choice between 2GB and 3GB RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal storage with support for microSD expansion, a 13-megapixel camera. Also present is Android 5.0 Lollipop with LG’s own skin overlaid on top.
The battery is a 3000mAh cell that is not removable, which is a little smaller than the one found on the original G Flex. While this is the case, LG is claiming that they have managed to extend the battery life a little more, while also allowing the device to charge from zero to 50-percent power in only 40 minutes.
LG has maintained the self-healing back on G Flex 2, which allows it to recover from minor scratches on its own. In fact, it has improved on the formula to increase the healing speed; which the company now claims will make those tiny marks disappear in under 10 seconds. The pattern on the back of the LG G Flex 2 is also apparently “inspired by stars that float across the night sky.”
One more thing to note is that LG is claiming that the device is more resistant to drops and falling damage thanks to the flexibility in the curved design. This might actually be true from a physics perspective, although it is hard to say just how much more resistant it actually is. Although, unlike some other smartphone brands, this particular device is supposed to bend.
The LG G Flex 2 will be rolling out in South Korea this month with a global launch soon to follow. It will ship in both Platinum Silver and Flamenco Red, although there is no word about pricing just yet.
