Lenovo has announced an updated ThinkPad X1 Carbon, featuring a return to an older style touchpad and updated processor. The company is also celebrating 100 million ThinkPads shipped. There are minor improvements, but the return to the classic Lenovo style should make fans sit up and take notice.
The 14-inch ThinkPad X1 Carbon looks the same on the outside, and still weighs about the same. Although Lenovo has removed adaptive panel that changed functions depending on what the user was doing. To be fair, it adaptive panel was not well received by fans; and going back to something more traditionally Lenovo is a good move.
There is an optional 2560 x 1440 touchscreen for those who would like the feature on their laptops, while the processor is being bumped up to the Broadwell processor. It comes with the same 4GB or 8GB, with a choice between a regular SSD or a PCIe SSD. Lenovo has also included an optional LTE radio, for those who would like the extra connectivity.
Interestingly, Lenovo has not decided to include the Intel RealSense camera on its flagship design; despite the fact that it is already including it on the lower end E450 and E550. It could be that the 3D camera would push the price up too high, but that shouldn’t deter anyone who is already looking into buying a ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
The refreshed Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon will be available globally from January 2015 for US$1249, although there is no news about local availability or pricing just yet.
