Samsung is getting the jump on 2015 by announcing the Ativ Book 9. Powered by Intel’s new Core M processor, this Ultrabook promises extra long battery life and almost silent running; the latter thanks to there being almost no moving parts at all in the machine.
Intel’s Broadwell based Core M chip isn’t exactly a powerhouse, but it doesn’t aspire to be. The processor is mainly aimed at general use, and should allow the Ativ Book 9 to handle most day-to-day tasks. Handling graphics is an Intel HD 5300 GPU, which is about right for watching Youtube videos and any movies not running at 1080p. Of course, the 2560 x 1600 resolution on the display may make some decide that BluRay quality is just what the doctor ordered.
Rounding out the specifications are either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and a choice between a 128GB or a 256GB SSD. Of course, having both an SSD and a lack of a fan means that the Ativ Book 9 should be completely silent while running, which is quite unusual for any kind of laptop.
Samsung is also promising up to 10.5 hours of battery life, most due to the power savings that come with the Core M processor. Although in practice this will probably vary quite a bit depending on what the Ultrabook is being used for.
The Samsung Ativ Book 9 will be made available in early 2015, with a price tag of US$1,199 for the 4GB RAM/128GB SSD version and US$1,399 for the 8GB RAM/256GB SSD version. There is no information about availability and pricing in Malaysia just yet; but then, Samsung have announced that they no longer sell laptops in this region.
