Google is reportedly planning to improve Android Auto in the form of a new project called Android M . Though Android Auto, an operating system for cars that allow the user to stream music and view maps was released last year, this early concept is looking to completely eliminate the need for an Android smartphone to enjoy the benefits of Android in a car.
Vice President and Automotive Practice Leader of Industry research firm Gartner, Thilo Koslowski said that Google’s plans came as a surprise to him. But he also went on to add that Android M is a good start for Google if they wish to solidify the presence of the Android operating system in a car.
If Google finds success in implementing a smartphone-free Android experience in an automobile, they would no doubt gain an advantageous lead over long time competitors Apple and their equivalent to Android Auto, CarPlay. Whether Android Auto and CarPlay are here to stay or not remains to be seen, but Google’s development of Android M not too long after Android Auto became commercially available, should indicate that the company is invested into it.
